I was surfing in Vancouver Island's Clayoquot Sound region with a friend - we spent time exploring the jagged rocks that break the shoreline of the Pacific Northwest, poking in tide pools and collecting stones.
We had unloaded 100 pounds of clay onto a makeshift worktable back at camp. It was there that the first of this series was made-an exploration with the same visual qualities and energy of the tidal biome. Finding harmony in what the environment provides, this series is a celebration of my relationship with the land and an opportunity to observe and listen. The process is slow and meditative, offering time to reflect on the connection between the materials I use and the forms they express. The glaze produces details at an infinitely small scale, encouraging the viewer to slow down and investigate.
